“Pulcino” Glass Bird, Model S191 by Alessandro Pianon (1931–1984) for Vistosi, Murano, Italy, 1962.

Designed in 1962 by Alessandro Pianon for Vistosi, this “Pulcino” is part of the celebrated series of five distinctive glass birds created by the designer for the Murano glassworks.

Hand-blown in dark green, khaki-toned glass, the bird is distinguished by its cubic-shaped body decorated with red and blue murrines, while two hot-applied murrines form its expressive eyes. The sculptural glass body rests on a pair of characteristic hammered copper legs, introducing a playful contrast between the transparency of the glass and the raw texture of the metal.

Referenced in the Vistosi archives as Model S191, this bird belongs to a series of five different “species”, each defined by its own silhouette, colour combination and decorative treatment. With their whimsical forms and unmistakable character, Pianon’s “Pulcini” have become among the most iconic creations of Italian Murano glass from the 1960s.
