L’arbre de la Vie by Line Vautrin

Artist
Line Vautrin

“Tree of Life” by Line Vautrin, gilt-bronze decorative box.
Gilded bronze box of almond shape, entirely sculpted in relief with a Tree of Life.
The vertical trunk expands into branches bearing small modelled faces, while at the base two human figures—representing the parents—appear to support or to bring the tree into being. This décor, at once archaic, poetic and symbolic, reflects Line Vautrin’s taste for allusive narratives and talismanic motifs in the years 1945–1955. The subtly hammered surface and vibrant modelling give the piece an almost votive presence, characteristic of her most expressive bronze castings.
In many traditions (Christian, Jewish, Gnostic, ancient), the number 9 is associated with completion and renewal.
And the Tree of Life conveys precisely a message of cycle, blossoming, and transmission.
For Vautrin — who delighted in interweaving esoteric, humorous and poetic symbols — the number 9 could evoke:
gestation (9 months),
the maturation of a life,
the fulfilment of a journey,
rebirth after ordeal (a central theme in her post-war work).
This resonates perfectly with her symbolic language.
