This mature work exemplifies Lanskoy’s distinctive abstract language: a dense composition of interlocking forms, animated by a luminous palette of pastel tones punctuated by more vivid accents. Rich impasto and rhythmic lines give the work a strong pictorial presence.
Biography
Born in Moscow in 1902, André Lanskoy settled in Paris in 1921, where he soon became part of the Montparnasse artistic milieu. Following an early figurative period, he gradually turned towards abstraction during the 1940s. Associated with the École de Paris and lyrical abstraction, Lanskoy developed a highly personal visual language based on colour, rhythm and fragmented forms. His work is now held in numerous international public collections. He died in Paris in 1976.
