“Laine” Vase by Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) for Venini Murano, Italy, designed 1991, executed 1994.

Designed in 1991 for Venini, Laine belongs to the final chapter of Timo Sarpaneva’s remarkable collaboration with the historic Murano glassmaker. Throughout his career, Sarpaneva sought to distil nature into pure form, drawing inspiration from the quiet landscapes of Finland, where light, water and horizon merge into a single, ever-changing presence. In Laine, this poetic vision finds one of its most accomplished expressions.

The generously rounded silhouette is defined by softly graduated layers of translucent and transparent blue glass, ranging from deep cobalt to delicate icy tones. Rather than merely describing colour, these subtle transitions evoke atmosphere, suggesting still water, distant horizons and the changing intensity of northern light. The restrained form allows the chromatic composition to unfold with remarkable serenity, creating an object whose presence is both sculptural and contemplative.

Entirely hand-blown at the Venini furnace, the vase demonstrates the extraordinary mastery required to achieve such seamless transitions between colour, transparency and volume. The apparent simplicity of the composition conceals a highly sophisticated understanding of glass as a medium capable of capturing and transforming light itself.

Engraved beneath the base “Venini 94 Sarpaneva”, this example was executed in 1994, during the early years of production of the series. The inscription precisely records its date of manufacture and documents the continued collaboration between Timo Sarpaneva and the historic Venini furnace.

Today, Laine stands among the most lyrical creations of Sarpaneva’s work for Venini. Balancing Scandinavian restraint with the expressive richness of Murano glass, it perfectly illustrates the designer’s enduring ability to transform light, colour and form into a timeless work of sculptural design.
