Les Sept Péchés Capitaux by Line Vautrin

Artist
Line Vautrin

“Les Sept Péchés Capitaux” Bracelet by Line Vautrin (1913–1997), France, circa 1945.

Executed in gilt bronze, this articulated bracelet is composed of a succession of links representing the Seven Deadly Sins: lust, sloth, wrath, gluttony, greed, pride and envy.

Each of the seven sins is represented by an expressive chiselled face. These figures alternate with four links bearing the inscriptions “Les”, “Sept”, “Péchés” and “Capitaux”, creating a graphic interplay between the faces and the words that form the title of the work.

With this bracelet, Line Vautrin humorously reinterprets the traditional theme of the Seven Deadly Sins through the language of jewellery, transforming a moral and allegorical subject into a wearable work of art that is both sculptural and highly inventive.
